Child-Centred Play Therapy

Helping children express, process, and grow through the language of play.

For children, play is a natural and developmentally appropriate way to communicate, explore emotions, and make sense of their world. Play Therapy offers children a safe and supportive space to express what may be difficult to put into words.

At Bloom Support Network, Play Therapy is child-centred, warm, and respectful. It supports children to build emotional regulation, confidence, self-expression, resilience, and connection in ways that feel safe and engaging.

What play therapy can help with

Play Therapy may help with:

  • Anxiety and worries

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Behavioural challenges

  • Trauma and adverse experiences

  • Grief and loss

  • Separation, family changes, or transitions

  • Confidence and self-expression

  • Social difficulties

  • Attachment and relationship challenges

  • Processing big feelings in a developmentally appropriate way

Play Therapy recognises that children do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling or experiencing. Through play, they are given a safe way to communicate, process, and heal.

Bloom Support Network’s approach to play therapy

At Bloom Support Network, our Play Therapy approach is warm, respectful, and child-centred. We follow the child’s lead while creating a safe therapeutic space that supports emotional expression, connection, and growth.

We understand that play is a child’s natural language, and we value the way children communicate through creativity, imagination, movement, and sensory experiences. Our sessions are guided by the child’s needs, pace, and developmental stage, while remaining grounded in therapeutic understanding and goals.

We also recognise the important role that parents and caregivers play in a child’s support journey. Where appropriate, this may include feedback, guidance, and collaborative strategies to help extend support beyond the therapy space.

What play therapy might include

Depending on the child’s needs, Play Therapy may include:

  • Child-centred play-based therapy sessions

  • Opportunities for emotional expression through play

  • Support to build emotional regulation and coping skills

  • Confidence and self-expression development

  • Therapeutic support around anxiety, trauma, grief, or change

  • Sensory, creative, and imaginative play experiences

  • Parent or caregiver review sessions, where appropriate

  • Collaborative support strategies for home and other environments

  • Ongoing review of therapeutic goals and progress

NDIS funding for play therapy

For eligible NDIS participants, Play Therapy may be available where the support aligns with the child’s goals, functional needs, and available funding. At Bloom Support Network, Play Therapy is provided under counselling services rather than psychology.

Play Therapy is also available privately for families seeking therapeutic support for their child outside of NDIS funding.

In the language of play, children tell the stories their hearts cannot yet speak.
